How EMI is calculated
This calculator uses the standard reducing-balance method that banks and financial institutions apply to term loans.
The formula
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)
- P — loan amount (principal)
- r — monthly rate = annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100
- n — number of monthly instalments
Good to know
Results are estimates for planning. Your lender’s final figure can differ because of processing fees, insurance, rounding, rate changes or day-count conventions. Confirm the exact repayment terms with your bank or financial institution before you borrow.
Common questions about EMI
What is an EMI?
EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the fixed amount you pay your lender every month until the loan is fully repaid. Each EMI covers part of the principal and the interest accrued on the outstanding balance.
How is EMI calculated?
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly instalments.
Does a longer tenure reduce my EMI?
Yes, a longer tenure lowers the monthly EMI, but you pay interest for more months, so the total interest cost rises. A shorter tenure raises the EMI but saves interest overall.
What is an amortization schedule?
It is a table showing every instalment split into principal and interest, along with the remaining balance. Early EMIs are mostly interest; over time the principal share grows.
Does this calculator include processing fees or insurance?
No. Results cover principal and interest only, using the reducing-balance method. Processing fees, insurance and other charges vary by lender and are not included.
Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
No. All calculations run in your browser. Nothing you enter leaves your device.
